Family History
Family history is now a growing interest all across the world, especially now that we are able to access many different records online, the internet has opened so many oportunities for everyone worldwide. Family history as a whole is something that we all can do in our own time, its a personal experience that doesn't have to be expensive, believe it or not there are other methods that may save you money in researching your family.
Firstly always research the free websites that are free to use such as www.freebmd.org.uk and www.familysearch.org. They are both very helpful websites and easy to use. The next tip that i would advise is when you research always backup your research with evidence, proving how you got each person. It is so easy to get carried away and finding people with the same names, dates of births and areas. Especially if you have a common surname like Lewis, Smith, Davis, Jones or Taylor and the last thing you want is to follow the wrong family.
Family history is personal to everyone of us because we all come from different backgrounds and origins. Some of you may have grown up knowing your grandparents and even your great grandparents, others may not be so lucky for one reason or another and know hardly anything about their family and where they came from.
Time Machine Back
The nearest thing that we have to a time machine is the family history records and there are so many to research and look at. One example is census collection alone from 1841 census - 1901 census which gives you an insight of the way our ancestors lived. They had larger families and many occupations that you don't here of today. To search the censuses it does cost depending where you are looking, you may be lucky and find that the particular area that you are looking in has a family history society and some societies local to that area have put on records on their own websites. Otherwise like me i found ancestry the most easiest and cheapest to use for where i am looking. I use www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to search for many of my scottish ancestors in Scotland.
Save Money Where You Can
Buying certificates can become very costly and mount up. Before jumping ahead and just purchasing a certificate that you are not sure of, try to think of other methods of getting that result. One example is that if you are looking for a marriage certificate and you know the mans full names eg. "Daniel Robinson", but only have the females surname eg "Cattermole", you can click on the page number of the result and it may bring up all the people that were marrried on that day and the likelyhood is that you will find a Daniel Robinson and ... Cattermole. Unfortunately this does not help everyone, its more successful for people looking for rare surnames.
